Living with 2 diabetics, type 1 and 2, I've come to learn the importance of choosing better healthier foods... 

With that being said it is not easy to go from food bursting with flavour to bland meals...as I come from a diverse family with roots from the east... lets just say where soya sauce and masala collide... As a family we've tried many ready made health meals and could not get use to the blandness, if that's a word.

So during lock down I started playing around with flavours...

My pride and joy, Bright Young Chefs cooking school, had to be put on hold and still is due to the current covid pandemic. 

I just feel that it is way too risky for my precious little chefs as wells as my immediate family who suffers from comorbilities...

And so Fresh began... meal time became more pleasant and palatable for everyone... my son was back to seconds lol

I would like to share my designer meals with you...

:COOKING SCHOOL      was established in November 2016. Our venue is a double garage which has been converted into a custom made kitchen for little chefs. Our little chefs dress the part with an apron and a chef hat. They are given their ingredients and then follow a recipe to create master pieces with the supervision of our staff. Our chefswill be provided with his/her own work station that is equipped with measuring equipment, mixing bowls and utensils required to create delicious meals. We work our way through the recipe step by step. Our little chefs get to measure, pour mix and bake their goodies. They then decorate and box their master pieces, which are taken home to be shared with family.

 

 We at Bright Young Chefs believe that cooking & baking with children can provide many beneficial learning experiences, here are a few that we have incorporated into our workshops:

  1. Fine Motor Skills: They get to develop their fine motor skill which is the control over the small movements of the hands and fingers, as well as the small muscles of the face and mouth (tongue) and feet. However, the focus is usually on developing the skills of the small muscles in the hands. Tasks such as holding a spoon, mixing, beating, shaking, pouring, rolling or cutting will help to develop your child’s fine motor skills.

  2. Mathematics: Your child will gain experience in counting and recognising numbers when measuring.

  3. Reading: They get to read and follow the method of a recipe. They also expand their vocabulary as they learn the names of the ingredients and equipment needed.

  4. Communication/Team work: Children can learn to share and how to take turns. Then when the cooking/baking is over, they enjoy eating together and socialising.

  5. Science: when cooking or baking we expose the Children to mini experiments e.g. liquid cake batter turns into a solid.

  6. General Knowledge: They learn about different foods and their origins e.g Pizza comes from Italy.

  7. Senses: We encourage your child to look, smell, feel, and taste different ingredients. They use the ears to listen by following the instruction.

 

To sum up, cooking can be great fun for all children. It can be a great bonding experience between children and a great tool for learning. It also helps to improve the use of their senses. We believe that an additional benefit is that a child is more likely to try new foods, for example vegetables, having been involved in the preparation.
